APA essay format is an acronym for a type of writing developed by the American Psychological Association. An APA format is a particular style mostly used by academicians to write educational pieces. This pattern of format is required for all types of essay and thesis, ranging from middle school essay topics to the postgraduate research paper topic. The great difference between an APA configuration and other types of formatting lies in the area of citations. Thus, the former provides for a very demanding and exact procedure in giving credence to cited works.

A student or researcher delving into social sciences or business activities must use the APA system. So you already know what to use if your supervisor does not ask you to do so. Actually, the APA style will have two aspects to deal with, the paper appearance and the referencing.

Rules for Using Parentheses APA essay format

  1. Alluding to sources of printed works, the last name of the author and the source of publication must be in parentheses. If you quote directly from a page, the page number should also be in parentheses.
  2. When you quote from a voluminous work using the APA, make a direct reference to the exact page so that a reader does not labor looking for it. You should also put the page number in parentheses after the alluded material when the name of the author has already been mentioned in the text.
  3. If you quote using the APA system, the whole quotation should be indented five spaces. At the end of the quotation you have to put in parentheses the name of the author, the year of publication and the page number, of course. Take note that this rule can be applied only if the quotation comprises more than forty words.

If you quote a publication from:

  • Two authors – include only their last names and the names should be linked by an ampersand.
  • Three to five authors – incorporate all their last names in your first reference, and in subsequent references only the first author's name must be used followed by 'et al'. Six authors and above should also use 'et al'.
  • Quotations from corporate authors require the name of the corporate body followed by the year of publication, all in parentheses.
  • For quotations from government documents – you are advised to name the government agency, its acronym, year of publication and page number, if any.
  • Anonymous works are identified by the title and the year of publication.APA essay format
  • If you carry out an interview, all above points should not be referred to in the reference list. All you have to do is simply to include the initials and surname of the interviewee and the date of interview on the page where you place your interview itself.

APA essay format also has a specific format for listing both printed and unprinted sources. First, references must only appear at the end of the text. References to authors are listed alphabetically using their last names followed by the year of publication in parentheses. The first word, names and word following a colon of every book title must appear in upper case. Also underline the title of every book, and journals, and capitalize all important words in the title of a journal. When making reference to authors, only the last name is used. The first and middle names appear only in initials. Also take note that the name of a publisher, plus the press is also cited.

All the above features will revolve around major writing aspects, such as determining how to write an essay outline and coming up with a good essay plan. Remember that tackling good essay topics can also be approached through the right formatting style.
