How to Begin an Essay Properly?

Common wisdom runs it’s better not to start at all, than to start poorly. Essay introduction is equally important in its rights as compared to the other parts of an essay. Your opening paragraph must win over readers’ endeavors to decide whether to read your work; it must set the tone for everything else in the paper announcing not only the subject but also the sort of the future audience. Readers must be literally wooed into reading a paper by more imaginative techniques than the blueprint beginning that simply gives a paper plan. But a few audiences may expect your opening paragraphs to outline everything you intend to do in your paper. Introductory paragraphs that summarize the paper to follow are especially popular among science writers. Such an outline of the scientific experiment is called an abstract in the scientific circles and is widely used in professional journals publications. It is up to you to decide what beginning is more appropriate in each particular case.

Technical Subtleties

A good essay introduction stirs the reader’s interest by forecasting what is to come. Some means of such forecasting are:

to lead up to an explicit statement of your  thesis;

to define a conflict, problem or question you aim to resolve;

to tell a story that illustrates the main point you will go on to make;

to move from a generalization to a specific case;

to indicate the method of your paper;

to challenge a widespread assumption or stereotype;

to accommodate readers who may not agree with you, explain the position you aim to oppose.

Sample Essay Introduction

You may get acquainted with one sample of how to arrive at an essay introduction and then think of your own one. Here are the questions by answering which you can formulate an ample idea for an introductory paragraph.

Topic: Should Euthanasia be legalized?.(type: Argumentative Essay)

It is possible to start with a startling example related to euthanasia that reflects your stand.

What is euthanasia?

Why is it debatable or controversial? Write something about the various positions on the issue.

What do you think of the subject and the controversy?

What is your stand? Essay thesis should reflect your stand and provide reasons for it.

Let Us Introduce Your Essay!

In case you hesitate in the choice what means of forecasting will serve your essay purpose best or simply do not have time to write a full-fledged essay, it is advisable to delegate your essay creation to the specialists in the academic writing sphere. MasterPapers.com can begin any essay with the essay introduction that suits its topic, type and thesis in the best way possible.

Essay on what? Is this what you ask yourself every time you need to write an essay? Most of us face this question when we have to write an essay and the topic is not assigned to us. The custom essay can be on anything at all. Essays could broadly be factual or abstract. Fact based topics are easy to write since they are amenable to research and based on hard facts.

With abstract topics, this is not always possible. Imagination is subjective and each individual’s account of it would differ from the next. Then again, how much could you research on such topics? For example, consider these topics:

(1)   Fact Based: “Analyze the role of religion in contemporary politics today.”

(2)  Imagination-based: “Analyze your feelings about a remarkable experience in your life.”

While you could easily find material on the former, for the latter, you would have to depend almost entirely on yourself. And that is not always the easiest thing to do.

Fact based essay writing could include almost any topic one could think of. These would relate to religion, politics, ethics, science and technology, literature, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, etc. They are usually heavy on explanation and research because not everyone can know of everything. It is not like writing about yourself where you know a lot already. These are topics out there being discussed by innumerable people, with various inputs that are verifiable and reliable.

So how do you deal with these topics? For one, first understand the topic thoroughly. What are you required to do? Do you need to simply describe the topic, or do you need to analyze it? What are your parameters for the essay? Are the boundaries drawn for you, or do you need to ascertain the beginning and the end of the subject matter given to you?

Let us see these examples: “Is capital punishment justified in the modern world?” This essay would require you to find out the following facts:

  What is capital punishment

  Which countries practice it

  Where is it banned

  On what grounds is capital punishment given

  When can it be contested

  What are the pros and cons about it

  What are the relevant ethical issues

  Why is it then justified or not justified

  If not capital punishment then what; how viable would be the alternative

Examples from around the world and especially from the country in which the assignment posits it

Notice how each of these points is based on hard facts. To take a stand on this argument, you would have to be acquainted with the facts of the subject.

Therefore, any essay on fact based topics (no matter if it’s a school essay or mba essay) would require careful research, planning, and presentation. However, since facts are easily available, it is easy to write out such essays. The only things you would need to mind are the facts themselves—you cannot get them wrong. That would surely go against your paper and your ability to deal with facts.

Almost anything under the sun can be described. Therefore, the list of topics for the descriptive essay type is endless and could range from the most banal to the most esoteric. Here is a list of a few such topics.

Profile: A profile essay requires you to describe one particular aspect of a person or thing, an event or experience, but most often, it would be about a person.

Example: If you were to profile your grandmother, you would describe her in general as a woman with various qualities. However, from among these qualities, you would key in on one particular attribute that you find the most significance and describe it in detail. The description will obviously follow up with examples of this characteristic.

A memorable experience: This descriptive essay will include a dash of the narrative. In describing an experience, you would need to provide a background of the experience, describe the experience itself in detail, describe and give examples of feelings and other responses to the experience.

For example, if you were to describe the experience of climbing a high mountain peak, you could write the following: (i) the peak and its element of challenge, (ii) your decision to climb, (iii) the experience of climbing (what happened along the way, your feelings, actions, responses to situations, exhilaration, etc), and (iv) the description of the peak as it appeared to you after the ascent, etc.

Describe a movie. To describe a movie, you would need to describe various facets: direction, acting talent, music, camera work, and editing. Which of these you choose to describe is a personal choice. A topic such as this relies largely on examples. If you were to describe the acting, you would need to describe the qualities that make the acting good or bad, great or mediocre; you would need to describe the characters the actors enact and say why and how the actors brought the characters to life, or how they could have done better, and other such details.

Describe an eating disorder and how it affects teenagers across America. This is a broad topic. You would need to provide a background of eating disorder in general, types of such disorders, their significance in American society, and then narrow your focus to one specific disorder.

Example: Bulimia. What is bulimia? Give brief but relevant background information. Describe its various aspects. Relate it to teenage food habits and the image of the self harbored by teens today. Give factual information about the disorder: what it does to the body and mind, statistics regarding its prevalence in America, et al. Lastly, describe how this disorder affects teenagers and follow up with examples and data.

Describe cloning as an experiment that has failed. Points to describe for such a topic are: cloning, human endeavor to imitate God, why and how cloning has failed. Under the last point, you would need to discuss in what ways it may have failed. Is the failure scientific, social, ethical, moral, or financial? How? Why? Give examples.

Writing an essay, especially a descriptive essay offers a large combination of possibilities. All you want to do is hit upon the key ideas and appropriate words to present your word-picture.

  Essay writing is something many individuals enjoy. For adults and professionals, there are myriad issues to explore and discuss, and an essay contest offers a platform to express the individual’s views on and knowledge of the issue of choice. The Internet presents a vast collection of contests sites that promise exposure and competition on an international scale.

HG.org, a site devoted to legal matters has a list of essay competition announcements in various categories pertaining to legal matters. The prize money is attractive, and the contests should prove to be exercises in demonstrating awareness and knowledge of legal issues such as religious law, law relating to gender issues, and matters of general jurisprudence.

For those interested in creative writing of the non-fictional variety, Places for Writers is a treasure house of links for various writing contests. This international one is open to various themes and topics, and the diligent writer can try his/her writing skills for a few of the sites listed here. Most of the links, however, are dedicated to fiction and poetry.

Those who base their writing on what they have experienced could try out Sheila Bender’s online magazine Writing it Real. The contest for 2007 ends on December 1, 2007, and winners will be announced by 25th December, 2007. The rules for the contest are clearly specified, but those looking for contests that pay well may be disappointed. This seems to be one of those contests where the creativity takes precedence over economics. There is a fee attached for the entries.

Atlas Shrugged and Ayn Rand have been a part of the reading consciousness since the novel was published. College students have the opportunity now to spar with words and deliberate on what passages and characters in this path breaking novel actually want to convey and how they relate to larger philosophical conjectures. Manuscript Editing brings a long list of contests including those on Ayn Rand’s book. The prize money is more than tempting, and the subject matter fascinating.

Make them want to be you! Yes, that’s theme for this year’s Funds for Writer’s contest: “Make us want to be you.” You have to convince the evaluators to want to be you or tell them about what you would do with a year’s time for pursuing your writing dreams. This promises to be interesting and allows you to talk about your plans, hopes, dreams, efforts, and achievements. There are two categories: the fee and non–fee sections. The deadline—31st October, 2007.

This is a rare site for Intelligence professionals out there. Who said Intelligence work and creativity do not go hand-in-hand? The AFCEA 2007 site calls for essays from intelligence professionals to write about a topic of considerable significance to their community and work. The last date for submitting is 31st October, 2007.

Writing can be invigorating, and when you write to win or even to challenge, it can be more so. These essay contest sites can help you make a mark for yourself in the world of words.

   Essays are of various kinds: descriptive, analytical, persuasive, and narrative among others. In this paper, we will discuss the persuasive essay example. It needs a definite topic that enables you to take a stand; neither questions, nor vague statements starting with “maybe,” “perhaps” can serve as argument topics. The argumentative essay attempts to persuade the reader to the writer’s point of view through strong argument, rationalizing, and examples.

  Examples:

Marijuana should not be allowed for medical purposes.

Abortion should not be  legalized.

Euthanasia should be made  legal.

Each of these topics encourages you to take a stand for or against. Once you take your stand, you have to adhere to it. Taking the stand is only the beginning of your argumentative essay. Now begins the process of collating information to defend your position, providing samples that prove your reasoning, and reiterating your stand with emphasis and conviction. How do you do this?

Let us consider this example for the persuasive essay:

Subject-Abortion should not be legalized.

Introduction: Provide the context for this subject. Why is it controversial? Consider the ethical, religious, social, or biological aspects. What is your own perspective? The introduction could start with a startling fact, example, or statistical data pertaining to the subject. This grabs reader attention for your work.

Thesis: Subject + stand + reasons. The thesis should state your stand clearly with convincing reasons supporting it. For example, “Abortion should be legalized because it ensures the woman’s right over her own body, does not involve any actual religious complications, and could prove to be a safeguard against medical complications.” The stand: Abortion should be legalized. Reasons: right over body, ethical, and medical concerns.

Paragraph 1—State the first point in defense of your stand. Example: Right to choice over one’s own body. Explain this point in clear detail stating facts and figures, laws, and the issue of personal freedom to defend your stand. Now follow this up with examples where the woman exercised personal choice or freedom. The example should be such that it proves your point, not weaken it. Now reemphasize the point.

   Paragraph 2—State the second point. Example: Religious arguments + explanation + example

Paragraph 3—State the third point. Example: Medical issue + explanation + example.

Paragraph 4—Counterargument. This is one argument that could weaken your own. You have to identify this and refute it. You could do this by pointing out loopholes in this argument or examples and statistics that prove the argument wrong.

Conclusion: Summarize the main points and reiterate your stand. You point out the weakness in the opposing viewpoint and emphasize the strength of your conviction.

The example here tells you how to write your persuasive essay. It is a good exercise in not just convincing others but also getting your thoughts straight about the given topic and convincing your self about your stand. It helps you to argue and polish your ability to rationalize.

Why would anybody want to write the essay online? That’s a simple question to answer. It gives you freedom freedom from the restrictions of writing at one place and within a specific time duration. It also gives you the freedom to read and reread your essay, edit it, proofread it as many times as you would like to, and submit it at your leisure when you think it is ready for submission. Of course, this does not mean that there is endless time for you to submit the paper because it is online. However even within the specific time limit, it is worlds away from the restrictive limits of writing the paper in the classroom.

Various universities and educational institutions allow you to write your papers and submit them online. All you do is write, and copy paste the file or upload it from your server to the institutes on the dates specified by them. You often get to see the results online and do not have to wait for your instructor to announce it.

The online essay system has another advantage. You could actually get your paper checked and edited, proofread for mistakes and cleaned up before you submit it for evaluation. You could access hundreds of such service providers on the Internet, and they read your papers and deliver them as per your requirement, keeping in mind the deadlines you need to meet.

The writing process for online essay submissions is different. Here, you get to know your topic, and take your time to deliberate on it. It is not like sitting at one place, in a classroom, seeing the topic for the first time, and writing out the compare and contrast essay within the limited time given to you. Here you have enough time to think about the topic, find out material relevant to it, collate the necessary inputs, and write out your paper. You then get time to proofread it at length, repeatedly, if required, edit it, fine tune it, take a look again, and copy paste it on the submission form.

The negative side of online essays is that it takes the challenge out of the writing. You have too much freedom, and the gift of the gab at the tiniest prompt is not required. It is much more challenging to write essays under restrictions. These exercises challenge your ability to think quickly, use information you have already, collate material in your mind, and write out the paper within the minutes specified. You need to know how to write, how to think, what thought process to apply, and how to sift material quickly.

Writing the essay online, however, has its own fun. You get to know much more about using electronic media for your submissions, you get enough time for a really polished essay, and you don’t worry about your handwriting. You also get to do all this sitting miles away from the institution, yet knowing that your essay will be read and evaluated for its worth.

   Essay questions are meant to make you think. They help you analyze and understand issues by using some key words that prompt you to think in a particular direction and manner. The Internet is a good place to begin searching for sample questions that help you prepare for them in advance.

Many Internet sites help you prepare for the questions. Specific courses and academic levels would have specific suggestions on this subject. So as you search for help, you would need to be focused and look for exactly that information that pertains to you.

So if you were an MBA aspirant, you could look up pages such as that of the Stanford MBA Program that has questions with accompanying suggestions on how to approach them. Most such sites also provide helpful tips on how to edit the paper before submitting it, the pitfalls to avoid, and the strengths to use.

Those taking their bar examinations need a different set of questions involving case studies and caselets that help them understand the nuances of a case and its legal terminology and context. Sites such as that of the New York State Bar Examination could help with sample questions. The questions are based on case studies. The answers are selected by the Board of Law Examiners and give you’re a clear idea of what would be expected of you when you take the examinations. Law essay questions are more intricate than those of other professional courses, and the student has to pay special attention to every detail. So it helps to search relevant sites before you take the plunge.

Literature students are faced with a barrage of different types of questions from across various texts. There is no limit to the questions that could be possibly asked of the literature student. Sometimes, these questions are specific, pertaining to a definite text, or author, or element of literature. Often, you could also get what is described as the open ended question where you get to choose the text depending on the question asked of you. Look out for sites that provide you literature specific questions that help you explore various facets of this subject, for example, Sandra Effinger’s collection of literature questions for the advanced placement course.

Educational institutes also have their own sites to help you with questions. For example, Tulane University’s Educational Resources and Counseling site gives guidelines on how to approach the essay questions in your test paper. Such sites help you pay attention to those subtle and minute matters that you may overlook in the high pressure environment of a test.

Addressing essay questions need not be frightening. With some practice, a general awareness of what to expect given the history of questions set by a particular institution, and a thorough and careful reading of the questions, writing on essay questions could be a dream. What you want to look out for are grammatical glitches and content errors that could mar an essay that you prepared for over the past few weeks.
