Friday, November 23, 2007 in  Essay Writing Tips by Kimberly | No Comments

The definition essay, as the name suggests, defines terms and ideas, words and concepts. You could define concrete terms in universally, but abstract ideas and words vary in their definition. For example, while most of us would define a rock or tree in a similar manner, each one of us would define love, hatred, cruelty, or tenderness in different ways.

Let us look at some topics and how to write for them.

Topic 1: Define alternative energy

Introduction paragraph: What is alternative energy? What is good about it as a resource? Why is it important to have alternative energy? How many types of alternative energy are there? How can you define this form of energy? NOTE: Think of the different sources of alternative energy as you write out the definition. This will also serve as the thesis for the paper. Example: Alternative energy can be defined as energy that ………. and can be categorized as x, y, and z.

Body Paragraphs: The number of paragraphs would vary depending on the length of the paper. Each of these should discuss one category of alternative energy, explain it along with their advantages and disadvantages, and substantiate with examples.

Conclusion: Summarize the main points of your discussion. Reemphasize the definition.

Topic 2: Define romantic love

Introduction paragraph: What is love? What is romantic love? What is the difference between the two? What is not romantic love? Often, explaining “what is not” helps clarify “what is.” What are the manifestations of romantic love? State your definition.

Body paragraphs: Discuss each manifestation with example. The examples could be personal, funny, or adventurous. Each example should highlight the aspect/s of romantic love that you state in the thesis statement (you can fine tips on how to write a thesis statement).

Why is it important to be aware of addiction? When does a habit become an addiction? State your definition. Example: “Addiction, in all its manifestations, is a habit gone out of control that determines our actions and thoughts and has a debilitating effect on the body and mind.”

Body Paragraphs: Explain the concept of a habit out of control, manifestations of addiction, effect on mind and body. Address each of these points in specific paragraphs and convincing examples.

Conclusion: Summarize the types of addiction you discuss and their effect. End with a comment on why it is necessary to prevent addiction. Emphasize the thesis.

Topic 4: Define prejudice

Introduction: What is prejudice? Are there different types of prejudice? How and in what manner does prejudice manifest itself? Definition. Example: “Prejudice is bias against a person, thing, idea, or feeling that hampers objective understanding and appreciation of the same.”

Body Paragraphs: Address prejudice against each item mentioned in different paragraphs. You will need to think in terms of examples that help you bring forth the idea of prejudice.

Conclusion: Summarize the types of prejudice and how they affect objectivity. Emphasize the need for objectivity and reinforce the thesis through this emphasis.
