Some Samples of the Essay Introduction

The essay introduction is the reader’s door into the document. We already know that the introduction should move from the general to specific. So how does this happen with different types of essays?
Topic 1: Describe a movie you liked. (type: Descriptive Essay)
- Begin with an experience of watching movies and enjoying them
- Some general points about the pleasure of watching movies
- Any particular type you like
- Key in on the particular movie you want to describe
- Which movie, which genre, director, and actors
- Something specific about the movie that will form a part of the latter discussion
- Thesis: descriptive thesis about the movie referring to those aspects that you will discuss in the main paragraphs
Topic 2: Analyze a book you did not like (type: Analytical Essay)
- Write something interesting about books in general or a genre if you so prefer
- Type of books you like or don’t like; reasons
- Which book will you discuss in the paper? What is it about? Who is the author?
- What is the book like? A short introduction to its subject and treatment
- Why do you dislike the book: Thesis should reflect your analysis of the book
Topic 3: Should Euthanasia be legalized? (type: Argumentative Essay)
- For this essay, you could start with a startling example related to euthanasia that reflects your stand
- What is euthanasia?
- Why is it debatable or controversial? Write something about the various positions on the issue
- What do you think of the subject and the controversy?
- What is your stand? Thesis should reflect your stand and provide reasons for it.
Topic 5: Narrate an incident that had a major influence on your life. (type: Narrative essay).
- This could start off on a philosophical or narrative tone. Something along the liens of: “I never thought my journey to the west could become so important to my existence.†OR, “Some days begin the same way but end in a drastically unexpected manner—Wednesday, 24th August, was one such day that changed the course of my life.†These opening statements grab the reader’s attention and s/he wants to know more about what happened. You have the reader firmly in your grasp now.
- After the arresting start, begin to narrate/describe the context within which the event took place. This will help lead readers along to the main event and its consequences. This could include references to family, your life in general, friends, activities, or anything else that is of relevance to what happened. However, this should be short so that the introduction does not exceed the required length.
- Move in a linear manner to the event.
- Now write the punch line. What was the event? How did it change your life?
The essay introduction, as we have seen, can throw up interesting avenues of expressing our thoughts and creativity. It is the beginning of the paper, and if the beginning is good, the rest of it will automatically draw attention too.
